Blog Image - Common traits among sales people and how it's changed over the years..

These are always going to be slightly debatable and no doubt everyone will chip in their two cents worth and we welcome that. Here at RedDot Recruitment and over the last 15 years we have noticed a pretty dramatic shift in how  sales people spend their time but the fundamentals remain unchanged.

What are these fundamentals we are talking about? They may be less considered “skills” and more considered “traits” but they could be traits that can be enhanced through studying/reading books to help bring these traits to the forefront when you are conducting deals in a professional environment.

  • Being personable and approachable - all barriers are lowered so that people can make contact with you – This applies in a digital environment also. Is your phone number, email, Social etc easily accessible to people who want to reach you.
  • Being proactive and opportunistic – Are you one of the majority who is reactive and waits for opportunities to land in your lap or are you a go getter? Are you hungry to be successful?
  • Being tenacious – Are you good at following up? 80% of sales require 5 follow-up calls after the meeting. 44% of sales reps give up after 1 follow-up.*1
  • Taking Control – After every call/interaction are you clearly aware of where you stand? Of what are the next steps are?
  • Excellent filtering capability – This is a relatively new one. With so much information flowing how do you choose what to pay attention to.

The Social Aspect

Then there is social media – a relatively new phenomenon. Never before have we been able to leverage Social Media which are free to use to enhance our personal brand and stick out from the crowd using sites such as linkedin, facebook and twitter to name a few.

These are just a few of the ways that sales people are fundamentally the same but how the landscape has changed and you need to be positioning yourself a little differently.

We would love to hear your comments.
